Picture of the School The School of Scottish Studies was established in 1951 by the University of Edinburgh as a centre for interdisciplinary research on Scottish subjects. It is housed in attractive Georgian buildings within the Arts complex of the University.

The School is the only Scottish institution that undertakes the systematic and extensive recording of folklore and regional ethnology in the field. Its sound and manuscript archives, unique in the British Isles and ranking with national archives in Europe and elsewhere, contain large and steadily growing collections of traditional songs, tales, instrumental music and information on traditional and changing ways of life. There are photographic, film, and videotaped archives and a large collection of material for the study of place-names.

Since 1996, the School's innovative PEARL project has used Real Audio and other internet technologies to provide real-time access to excerpts taken from the Tocher magazine and other resources.

The Linguistic Survey of Scotland (Gaelic and Scots) is based in the School, as is the Institute for Historical Dialectology.
